Bausch & Lomb recently recalled its ReNu with MoistureLoc® contact lens solution from the worldwide marketplace. This solution has reportedly been linked to dangerous fungal eye infections known as fusarium keratitis. If untreated this infection can damage the cornea and possibly lead to blindness.
More Information about ReNu Recall
On March 9, 2006, the Center for Disease Control received a report from an ophthalmologist of three patients developing the rare fungal eye infection known as fusarium keratitis. By April 9, 2006, the CDC was investigating 109 cases of suspected fusarium keratitis infections. 93% of these patients wore contact lenses. 100% of the patients who recalled which contact lens solution they used reported using ReNu with MoistureLoc®, manufactured by Bausch & Lomb. As of May 12, 2006, the Center for Disease Control reportedly confirmed 122 cases of fusarium keratitis, which is more commonly found in the tropics, in 33 U.S. states and territories. The CDC is currently investigating at least one potential case in Virginia.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that Bausch & Lomb’s own investigation reveals the formulation of ReNu with MoistureLoc® increases the risk of fusarium keratitis. FDA investigators are looking into whether the source of these infections was contamination at Bausch & Lomb’s Greenville, South Carolina plant.
Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea in the front of the eye. Keratitis can come from a virus, bacteria or a fungus like fusarium. The fungus can scar the cornea causing blindness. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that users of ReNu with MoistureLoc® should contact their eye doctor if they experience unusual redness, blurry vision, tearing, light sensitivity, pain, discharge or swelling.
